Transforming education in a vibrant democracy

Nearly everyone agrees that quality education is the answer to societal problems like unemployment, crime and general social decay. But the state struggles to provide schools that deliver quality teaching and learning.

So how can government be supported in its task of delivering quality education and in particular, what role can civil society play?

Come along and hear Peter Kallaway speak on how we can transform education through greater democratic involvement.

Peter Kallaway is Emeritus Professor of Education at the University of Cape Town. He is a graduate of Rhodes University, the University of Cape Town and the University of London. He has been a member of the educational profession in South Africa since the sixties, as a high school history teacher, a teacher educator, and a historian and critic of apartheid education. His publications include Apartheid and Education: The Education of Black South Africans (1984) and Education after Apartheid: South African Education in Transition (1997).
