Growth & Development Summits

Building on the results of the National Growth and Development Summit (NGDS) in June 2003, government proposed that all District and Metropolitan Municipalities hold Growth and Development Summits (GDS) in their area of jurisdiction. The summits would provide opportunities for building partnerships with social partners by bringing together representatives from the broadest sections of society: labour, business, community sector and government (local, province and national).

The District GDS also formed part of the Eastern Cape Job Summit held in February 2006. In the job summit agreement, organised local government committed to holding these summits before the end of March 2007, to give affect to the Job Summit agreement and the PGDP at local, district and metropolitan municipal level.

District and metropolitan councils are primarily responsible for holding the summits, with ECSECC providing coordination and leadership at the provincial level.
